Why the Democrats just don’t get it!

Why the Democrats just don’t get it!

I have heard the Democrats say at least three times in as many weeks that if President Bush refuses to change course in Iraq they can always cut off funding for the war. WOW! Déjà vu !

That takes me back. Many reading this were not even born when the Viet Nam war was in full swing. Before I proceed, let me lay some ground work. Viet Nam was not a civil war as I have heard some say. South Viet Nam was a free democrat nation recognized by the United Nations as a free, independent and sovereign nation. When the Socialist Communist country of North Viet Nam attacked South Viet Nam, they asked us, their ally, for help and we responded.

In 1971, the Democrat party had unprecedented power in Congress. Not since about the 1920’s or 30’s when the Democrats amended the United States Constitution to deny Americans freedom of speech had they had such power.

In early 1971, we were involved in an operation called Lam Son 719. we had pushed further north than we ever had before. We were almost in striking distance of Hanoi, the capital of North Viet Nam. The Viet Cong were being pushed back and if memory serves me correctly they lost nearly half of their forces.

During this battle as we pushed north in to Laos and toward Hanoi, North Viet Nam came out and said that if we ceased our operation and fail back to the DMZ then they would set down at the negotiation table and talk peace. We had heard this song and dance a hundred times before. It would go like this. We would draw back. They would set down at the table and stall while they reinforced their troops and supplied them with arms and ammo. Then they would leave the table and walk away and attack again. The Democrats fell for it every time.

This time, a Washington D.C. TV news correspondent got two Democratic Congressmen (who I believe were the two majority leaders at the time) to answer some questions concerning the latest offer of talks by North Viet Nam. He asked them what they thought about the latest offer. Their answer was that if North Viet Nam was willing to set down at the negotiation table and talk peace then they saw no reason why we should not draw back to the DMZ and were willing to do so.

General Abrams, commander of South Viet Nam’s forces, got word of what the two Democrat Congressional leaders had said, and held a press conference in the middle of the Viet Nam jungle surrounded by fourteen or so news correspondents with cameras and microphones. In answer to the congressmen’s comments he said “not no but hell no, we are not going to pull back to the DMZ. We are going to press forward. When we reach Hanoi we’ll have peace. If they set down to the table and reach a peace agreement before we reach Hanoi then that is good too”.

The same Washington D.C. TV news correspondent interviewed several American citizens on the streets. All of them agreed with General Abrams. They all said if we were going to fight the war to win, they would stand behind him. After that he again interviewed the two majority congressmen. They were livid. They were so angry they could barely hold it in and refused to answer any questions from the DC news correspondent.

Within a day, the Democrat controlled congress held an emergency closed session of Congress. They imposed an information black out not releasing any information as to the reason for the emergency meeting. After a day or so, one of the two Congressmen who had been interviewed held a national press conference on the steps of the Senate building and told America “Congress has voted to cut arms going to South Viet Nam”. That was it. There was nothing else. He refused to answer any further questions.

For the next several weeks congress was silent. They had cut back arms going to our troops in South Viet Nam. They had exercised their power to cut funding for arms in time of war. After they cut arms, we no longer were able to press our advantage and push to Hanoi. We could not even hold the positions we had taken. We were forced to retreat, to fall back fighting for our lives. Military casualties reached as high as one thousand a day. But still congress was silent refusing to answer the questions of why, refusing to increase arms to save those dying, watching with apathy as soldiers were slaughtered. Then, when we were pushed back to the DMZ, congress held another closed session of congress. After that, the same Democrat majority congressman, who stood on the steps of the Senate and pronounced death on those soldiers who died, stood defiantly before the press and announced to America “Congress has voted to increase arms going to South Viet Nam.”.

This was the greatest act of treason since the founding of the New World. It was a deliberate act resulting in the deaths of thousands of soldiers. It was an act that went unpunished when they should have been charged with Treason and put to death. However, it was 35 years ago and you can’t cry over spilt milk. But when Democrats even consider with holding funding during a war, it is time for concern.
